It might be a different experience with the dorms full of children. We took the night tour of the zoo and it was fascinating, especially playing inside the cage with the anteaters. The Parrots Nest boosts tree houses to stay in. The facilities were wonderful, there even was an active bird nest on the windowsill. Birding was easy from your room, by the river, and on the property. We planned to stay one night and stayed 4 instead. We also were able to leave our vehicle there while we went to Tikal, Guatemala overnight. The Parrots Nest and Chan Chich were our favorite stops, and the Parrots Nest is 1/4 the price. Tandayapa Bird Lodge - great place for hummers with scores of them around the feeders all day long. Great trails around the lodge. Handy for the Tandayapa Valley(obviously!) and the Old Nono-Mindo. Good standard of accommodation and food. Very steep path to the lodge from the car park maybe be a problem for those with mobility difficulties - I found trekking poles to be a big help here. Basic rooms but an excellent birding spot with feeders on a veranda that overlooks the huge valley of the Rio Blanco - spectacular. Trees all around gave us species that we didn't see elsewhere. Another place with great food and staff that are so helpful and welcoming. Los Bancos oddly enough doesn't have a "banco" but there are phone booths in the town. Culebra National Wildlife Refuge is one of over 400 wildlife refuges administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service in the United States, Puerto Rico and US territories. These refuges, managed principally for migratory birds and other unique wildlife values, are part of the National Wildlife Refuge System in the Department of the Interior. The Culebra Refuge, which comprises about 1,480 acres, includes 23 islands and rocks in addition to the four tracts on the main island of Culebra. The refuge is well known as a nesting site for a variety of seabirds and preserves important habitat for endangered sea turtles and the Culebra Giant Anole.

Buchu Bush Camp is situated in pristine Fynbos out in the wilds but close to the main gate into De Hoop Nature Reserve and provided us with very comfortable accommodation and food. We got our only Cape Vulture of the trip over the car park. A wonderful spot. Self-catering chalets provide loads of space. Wonderful night skies without light pollution were awesome. Four of us took a week's break in Aragon, Spain to see the more difficult species of the Pyrenees and their foothills. We stayed at a wonderful place called Boletas in Loporzano near Huesca with the delightful Josele and Ester. Josele helped us immensely with those difficult species such as Wallcreeper, Snowfinch, Lammergeyer, Citril Finch etc. He has an excellent network of contacts so that his is the very latest news on locations of birds. He also fixed us up with other accommodation up in the Pyranees and the only hotel close(ish) to the plains near Belchite where Duponts Larks are to be found ... and if you are fortunate ... seen!!!! Loads of advice ... and all for free.

At Kaeng Krachan Nat. Park we used A & B Bungalows. Looks like most of the bird tour company's use them also. They are a family run operations and are very friendly, hardly any English, very clean bungalows and will make lunches for the field and serve breakfast at any time and also have a basic restaurant so it is good. We were picked up at the airport by the manager Sadrettin Özkök who apart from being a really nice guy is very efficient, friendly and knowledgable. Sadji speaks English well and has a bit of German. The chef Suleiman is a young man, perhaps late twenties, who is a master of his art, providing good, tasty, healthy food for all to enjoy. The general helper Achmed is a willing worker and puts himself out to assist in every way. Sadji has the full confidence and respect of his staff and obviously enjoys their company as they enjoy his, this enables the service to be as good as it gets. The hospitality shown to all at the resort is impeccable. The accomodation consists of apartments each with their own shower/bathroom and a balcony giving spectacular views across the lake. The birdlist is remarkable but a survey in the spring would be even better!
